| Day 1 - May 20, 2008 - Amsterdam to Anchorage. Today, an early departure from Schiphol, Amsterdam Airport, Holland for an 8.5 hour flight with Continental Airlines to Newark Liberty Airport, NJ. The flight was smooth and only 60 % full, so no occupied middle seats, which is nice. The quality of the aircraft was ready for improvement; an old 757-200 with tray tables that were almost falling off, no adjustable headrests, poor sound quality and very small overhead TV screens, 10" is my estimate. Let's hope that our return flight in 3 weeks time will be in a better aircraft. Clearing immigration and customs and check in for the next leg of the trip was completed within one hour. From Newark, it was a 5.5 hour flight to Seattle, WA at the west coast of the USA. This time it was a full Continental Airlines flight, but with a much better maintained aircraft. Nice big screens, solid tables. A short connection was OK to get us checked in for the last part, a 3.5 hour flight from Seattle to Anchorage, AK. The Alaska Airlines operated flight was about 60 % full, meaning 3 seats for each of us. So, after 24 hours of travel, we had arrived at our first destination. The shuttle bus of our hotel, the Best Value Inn Executive Suites Hotel in Anchorage dropped us off and we enjoyed our good night sleep.
